Chunky, dark-haired American supporting player with lived-in, rather hangdog features. A staple for Brooklynese characters in Hollywood films for more than 30 years, he was also popular on TV, notably as the barman in All in the Family. Originally a performer with a puppet company, he moved into acting in the early 1950s, and soon added films to his CV: Three Brave Men (1956), The James Brothers (1957), The Bravados (1958), Everything's Ducky (1961), A Rage to Live (1965), Warning Shot (1967), Marlowe (1969), The Dunwich Horror (1970), The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), Skin Game (1971), The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972), The Terminal Man (1974), Hustle (1975), Airplane! (1980), Oh, God! You Devil! (1984) and Arthur 2: On the Rocks (1988), his last, although he continued acting in TV drama until the mid 1990s.
