Brown-haired, apple-cheeked, diminutive teenage American star who won an Oscar for her poignant portrait of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker (1962), but endured a troubled private life, suffering from bipolar disease as well as drink and alcohol problems. She also had heart bypass surgery in 2004 and was three times divorced, but became a staunch campaigner for the understanding of both AIDS and mental health problems. Born Anna Marie Duke, she was on TV at eight, and soon established herself as one of America's brightest young film actresses: Country Music Holiday (1958), The Goddess (1958), Happy Anniversary (1959), Billie (1965), Valley of the Dolls (1967), Me, Natalie (1969), You'll Like My Mother (1972). She made a multitude of TV movies (more than 60) and a few more films: The Swarm (1978), By Design (1981), Willy/Milly (1986), The Hitch-Hikers (1989), Prelude to a Kiss (1992), Kimberley (1999), Wrong Turn (2003), Bigger Than the Sky (2005), The Four Children of Tander Welch (2008), Amazing Love (2012) and Power of the Air (2016), her last. The third of her husbands was actor John Astin. Her last husband, Michael, survives her. She died from sepsis following a ruptured intestine.
