Tow-haired, thick-necked, wide-smiling American supporting actor. Much associated with Burt Reynolds, a close friend with whom he acted in several films, as well as writing and directing episodes of Reynolds' TV series Evening Shade, Hampton was also bugler Hannibal Dodds in the popular TV comedy western series F Troop and the title character's father in the 'Teen Wolf' films and subsequent TV series. He had made his debut in the Oscar-winning short The Cliff Dwellers/One by One in 1962, but it was some years before, helped by Reynolds' patronage, he became established in film roles: Soldier Blue (1970), The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973), Fade In (1973), The Mean Machine/The Longest Yard (1974), WW and the Dixie Dancekings (1975), Hustle (1975), Hawmps! (1976), The Cat from Outer Space (1978), The China Syndrome (1978), Hangar 18 (1980), Condorman (1981), Kudzu (1983), Teen Wolf (1985), Teen Wolf Too (1987), Pump Up the Volume (1990), Sling Blade (1996), Danny and Max (2000), Fire from Below (2008), The Last Ride (2011), Flutter (2013) and Divine Access (2015), his last. He died from Parkinson's Disease.
