Boyish, diminutive English director with gnomelike features and receding light-brown hair. He burst into prominence at 24 with the Oscar-nominated short The Six-Sided Triangle (1963), but most of his films thereafter had more ambition than success, mixing earthy, sometimes provocative period subjects with occasional mainstream fare: A Vol d'Oiseau (short, 1962), Rhythm 'n' Greens (short, 1964), Up Jumped a Swagman (1965), The Rue Lepic Slow Race (short, 1967), The Virgin and the Gypsy (1970), A Time for Loving (1971), The Maids (1974), That Lucky Touch (1975), Priest of Love (1980), then several films for TV before The Clandestine Marriage (1998) and Fire from Olympia (2012), his last. The older brother of actress Sarah Miles and married to painter Suzy Armstrong, who survives him, he died from cancer.
