Guy Hamilton

Director

Born - 22 September 1922, Paris, France
Died - 20 April 2016

Dark, urbane, austere British director who made some cracking low-budget British 1950s' movies and and four of the best James Bond thrillers before somewhat dissipating his talent on over-inflated all-star films. He had begun in French films (4th assistant director on Julien Duvivier's Untel Pere et Fils in 1940) before settling in Britain after war service and working on some of the best post-war movies as assistant director: The Fallen Idol (1948), The Third Man (1949), State Secret (1950) and The African Queen (1951). His prolific output as solo director included The Ringer (1952), The Colditz Story (1955), Manuela (1957), A Touch of Larceny (1959), The Best of Enemies (1961), Goldfinger (1964), Funeral in Berlin (1966), Battle of Britain (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Live and Let Die (1973), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Evil Under the Sun (1982) and Try This One for Size (1989), his last. His marriage to actress Naomi Chance ended in divorce, and he later married another actress, Kerima (Miriam Charriere, 1925- ), whom he met when assistant director on Outcast of the Islands (1951).
