Karl Malden

Actor

Born - 22 March 1912, Chicago, USA
Died - 1 July 2009

One of Hollywood's most distinctive character stars, with his plum nose, scowling smile and rasping tones, he was born Mladen Sekulovich to Czech/Serbian parants and spoke no English until he went to kindergarten. He threw up a job in a steel factory to go to dramatic school and made his stage debut in 1937, with his film bow coming three years later in They Knew What They Wanted. After war service, his career took off in such films as Boomerang! (1946) and Kiss of Death (1947). He remained a top supporting player, often as priests or trilbied cops, until his Oscar for A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) gave him leading roles, notably in On the Waterfront (1954), Baby Doll (1956), One-Eyed Jacks (1960) and Gypsy (1962). Later, on TV, he co-starred with Michael Douglas in the long-running police series The Streets of San Francisco. His last theatrical film was Nuts in 1987, but in the 1990s, he still found time to appear in film documentaries. He and his wife Mona celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in December of last year - one of the longest partnerships in Hollywood history.
