Jane Powell

Actress/singer

Born - 1 April 1929, Portland, Oregon, USA
Died - 16 September 2021

Tiny, sweet-faced American singing star with bubbly blonde hair, often seen as the refreshing teenager who gazed at the hero from afar but eventually landed him, in MGM musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. One of her last, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), was perhaps her best. Born Suzanne Burce, her spectacular coloratura soprano was first heard as a teenager in Song of the Open Road (1944), subsequent starring roles including those in Delightfully Dangerous (1945), Holiday in Mexico (1946), The Birds and the Bees (1948), A Date with Judy (1948), Luxury Liner (1948), Nancy Goes to Rio (1950), Wedding Bells (1950), Rich, Young and Pretty (1951), Small Town Girl (1952), Three Sailors and a Girl (1953), Athena (1954), Hit the Deck (1955) and The Girl Most Likely (1957). Her fortunes faded with the demise of musicals, but she made further appearances in The Female Animal (1958), Enchanted Island (1958), Marie (1985) and Picture This (1998). She was last seen in the TV movie The Sandy Bottom Orchestra in 2000. Five times married: the fifth, to former child star Dickie Moore, lasted 27 years until his death in 2015.
