Tall, long-headed, scholarly-looking English-born actor with tufty eyebrows. In America from 1957 after a brief debut in English films, he soon established himself as a formidable stage performer, and played some juicy supporting roles in films: The Battle of the River Plate (1956), Rachel, Rachel (1968), The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (1972), The Terminal Man (1974), Earthquake (1974), Land of No Return (1978), Popeye (1980), The Thing (1982), an excellent Lyndon B Johnson in The Right Stuff (1983), The Best of Times (1986), Far North (1988), Music Box (1989), The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Regarding Henry (1991), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Evening Star (1996), Cookie's Fortune (1999), his last, and many more, usually as figures of authority. He retired in 2005, and died from stroke complications a few days before his 88th birthday. .
