Sheila Steafel

Actress

Born - 26 May 1935, Johannesburg, South Africa
Died - 23 August 2019

Dark-haired, slimline South African-born actress with elongated, impish features and prominent chin, faintly reminiscent of Geraldine McEwan. It was a face made for creating laughter and indeed she won the Margaret Rutherford Award for comedy at the Webber Douglas drama school. She made her debut in a short film, Long Distance (1958), but it was the mid 1960s before she hit her film stride as a scene-stealing supporting performer: Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966), Just Like a Woman (1966), Quatermass and the Pit (1967), The Bliss of Mrs Blossom (1968), Otley (1968), Goodbye Mr Chips (1969), Baby Love (1969), Some Will, Some Won't (1970), S.W.A.L.K./Melody (1971), Percy (1971), Catch Me a Spy (1972), Digby the Biggest Dog in the World (1973), All I Want is You...and You...and You (1974), Never Too Young to Rock (1976), Are You Being Served? (1977), What's Up Superdoc? (1978), The Quiz Kid (1979), Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984), Woof! (1989), Parting Shots (1998) and Back to the Secret Garden (2000), her last. Her only marriage was to actor/comedian Harry H Corbett: they were divorced after seven years.
