Patricia Neal

Actress

Born - 26 January 1926, Packard, Kentucky, USA
Died - 8 August 2010

Fair-haired performer of haunted, glacial beauty whose distinguished career was stalled after a series of strokes in 1965. Born Patsy Neal, she was one of the best Hollywood actresses of her time, but played fewer roles than her talent merited. Debuting in The Fountainhead (1948) and beginning a long-lasting affair with its star, Gary Cooper, she also did good work in The Hasty Heart (1949), Bright Leaf (1950), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Diplomatic Courier (1952), A Face in the Crowd (1957), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Hud (1963, for which she won a deserved Oscar), In Harm's Way (1965), The Subject Was Roses (1968, her second Oscar nomination), Baxter! (1972), Ghost Story (1981), and, much later on, Cookie's Fortune (1999), her last. She married author Roald Dahl in 1953 (divorced 30 years later) and had five children, one of whom, a girl, died from measles at the age of seven. Neal herself died after a long battle with lung cancer.
