Tall, balding, hook-nosed Italian director who, in his prime, specialised in Italian films made for the international market with Hollywood stars. Beginning his prolific output at 31, his films include Pigeon Shoot (1961), Strip for a Living (1963), The Reckless (1965), Grand Slam (1967), Machine Gun MacCain (1969), Sacco & Vanzetti (1973), Giordano Bruno (1974), Agnes, Who Wants to Die(1976), Il Giocattolo (1979), Farewell, Enrique Berlinguer (1984), The Gold-Rimmed Glasses (1987), Time to Kill (1989), Ci Sara Una Volta (1992), Secret of the Eagle (1997), The Demons of St Petersburg (2008), Cuban Gold (2009) and The Entrepreneur (2011), his last. Survived by Vera, his wife of more than 60 years, and their daughter Elisabetta, a film costume designer.
