Michael Medwin

Actor

Born - 18 July 1923, Camberwell, London, England
Died - 26 February 2020

Cheery-looking, sandy-haired British actor (in several films he played characters called Ginger) of youthful aspect and pronounced lower lip. Usually seen as brash young men, cockney crooks or soldiers up to all kinds of dodges, he sprinkled these characterisations with a few lounge-suited wiseacres. After a debut in Piccadilly Incident (1946), he rattled up nearly 70 films, many of them in the 1950s, before becoming a successful producer. Many subsequent films included The Root of All Evil (1946), The Courtneys of Curzon Street (1947), Black Memory (1947), My Sister and I (1948, also co-wrote), Night Beat (1948), Trottie True (1949), Boys in Brown (1949), Someone at the Door (1950), Trio (1950), The Long Dark Hall (1951), Curtain Up (1952), Top Secret (1952), Malta Story (1953), The Intruder (1953), Bang! You're Dead (1954), The Teckman Mystery (1954), Above Us the Waves (1955), Doctor at Sea (1955), Charley Moon (1956), A Hill in Korea (1956), Doctor at Large (1957), The Wind Cannot Read (1958), The Duke Wore Jeans (1958), Carry On Nurse (1959), Heart of a Man (1959), Crooks Anonymous (1962), It's All Happening (1963), Rattle of a Simple Man (1964), I've Gotta Horse (1965), A Countess from Hong Kong (1966), Scrooge (1969), O Lucky Man! (1973, and produced), The Sea Wolves (1980), Britannia Hospital (1982), The Jigsaw Man (1984), Hotel du Paradis (1986), Just Ask for Diamond (1988), The Fool (1990), Staggered (1993), Fanny & Elvis (1999), The Duchess (2008) and Framed (2008), his last.
