Lean, dark-haired, swarthy supporting actor whose most prominent film work was done during a five-year, 20-film spell with Warner Brothers in the early 1950s, a studio for whose television arm he contributed the role for which most remember him - Detective Lee Hobson in the long-running crime seriesThe Untouchables. After war service as a bombardier, he combined theatre with extra work in films, his movie career proper beginning with small roles in Beyond Glory (1948) and Twelve O'Clock High (1949). With the arrival of the Warner contract came better parts, appropriately beginning with Breakthrough (1950), then Operation Pacific (1950), Fort Worth (1951), The Tanks Are Coming (1951), The Miracle of Fatima (1952), Mara Maru (1952), She's Back on Broadway (1953), The Desert Song (1953), House of Wax (1954) and Riding Shotgun (1954). Freelancing, he made To Hell and Back (1955), Hell's island (1955), Miracle in the Rain (1956), Operation Mad Ball (1957), The Brothers Rico (1957), The Deep Six (1958), Torpedo Run (1958) and The City Jungle (1959) before The Untouchables consumed the next few years. Later movies included The Scalphunters (1968), Airport (1969), Kotch (1971), a leading role in Violent Rage (1972), then lots of TV movies before Capricorn One (1977), Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979) and more TV. His last feature was Three Days to Vegas (2007), an 'old codgers' movie directed by his younger brother Charlie. He died from a heart attack.
