Monte Hale

Actor-singer

Born - 8 June 1919, San Angelo, Texas, USA
Died - 29 March 2009

The last survivor of the singing cowboys, tall, cherub-cheeked, dark-haired Monte Hale began his career as a guitarist, but started playing small roles for Republic Studios, home of the B western: The Big Bonanza (1944), Topeka Terror (1945), Rough Riders of Cheyenne (1945) and California Gold Rush (1946) among them. From 1946, the personable Hale, born Samuel Buren Ely, was given his own series of musical westerns, often in Magnacolor or Trucolor: Home on the Range (1946), Out California Way (1946), Last Frontier Uprising (1947), Son of God's Country (1948), Outcasts of the Trail (1949) and The Missourians (1950), his last starring film. Later he tried a few character roles, including Yukon Vengeance (1954), Giant (1956) and The Chase (1966). Thereafter he toured in rodeos and concentrated on a second career as a songwriter.
