Irvin Kershner

Director

Born - 29 April 1923, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Died - 27 November 2010

One of Hollywood's most consistent directors for nigh on 30 years. Born Isadore Kershner, the tall, long-faced Philadelphian began as an actor, and became the only man to direct James Bond and Star Wars movies. But there was more to Kershner (Kersh to his friends) than action: he was successful in a wide variety of genres. Producer Roger Corman gave him his start with the taut juvenile-deliquency thriller Stakeout on Dope Street (1958). The next two, also low-budget black-and-white dramas, The Young Captives (1959) and The Hoodlum Priest (1961) were also well received, and Kershner moved on to bigger things, some mainstream, but some also offbeat: Face in the Rain (1963), A Fine Madness (1966), One Born Every Minute/The Flim Flam Man (1967), Loving (1970), S*P*Y*S (1974), Raid on Entebbe (1976), Eyes of Laura Mars (1978), The Empire Strikes Back (19809), Never Say Never Again (1983) and RoboCop 2 (1990), his last. He died from cancer complications.
