Blue-eyed, straight-staring blonde actress with distinctively reedy voice, the daughter of actor Mervyn Johns. Often seen as sexually approachable ladies who made the advances to men, she was perfectly cast in two films as Miranda the amorous mermaid, but is perhaps best remembered today as suffragette Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins (1964) although, with her attractive singing voice, she might equally as well have been cast in the title role.
