Tall, dark, dour American actor, frequently seen in large rimless glasses. Playing officers, detectives and businessmen, often with a steely core, he seemed to escape the public eye until cast in the running role of gimlet-eyed Lt Howard Hunter in the hit TV series Hill Street Blues. Films include Five Guns West (1955), The Revolt of Mamie Stover (1956), The Strangler (1963), The Carpetbaggers (1963), The Americanization of Emily (1964), Von Ryan's Express (1965), In Like Flint (1967), Point Blank (1967), Charro! (1969), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972), Scorpio (1973), The Terminal Man (1974), Capricorn One (1977), The Electric Horseman (1979), Ordinary People (1980), Outland (1981), The Star Chamber (1983), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Morons from Outer Space (1985), Soul Man (1986), Narrow Margin (1989), Final Approach (1991), The Pelican Brief (1993), Dead Badge (1995), Fever Pitch (2005), Maid of Honor (2008), Wild About Harry (2009) and Just an American (2012), his last. Survived by Florine, his (second) wife of more than 60 years, and two children, he died from dementia complications. The 'B' stood for Barrie, named after his parents' favourite author.
