Richard Stapley (aka Richard Wyler)

Actor

Born - 20 June 1923, Westcliff-on-Sea, England
Died - 5 March 2010

Lean, dark, rather pugnacious-looking actor in semi-leading roles who had a rather strange and very varied career. Post-war years found the English actor in Hollywood, where he featured for MGM in the Three Musketeers (1948) and Little Women (1949). Later, there were swashbuckling roles in The Strange Door (1951), King of the Khyber Rifles (1953) Charge of the Lancers (1954) and The Iron Glove (1954). After 1960, he looked further afield, changed his name to Richard Wyler, and found leading roles in a UK TV series, The Man from Interpol (1960-61), and a number of costume and action pictures on the Continent, including The Barbarians (1960), The Exterminators (1965), The Bounty Killer (1967), Winchester Bill (1967) and The Girl from Rio (1969). Later, there were smaller roles in Connecting Rooms (1970) and Frenzy (1972), his last. Stapley was also a motor-cycling fanatic, competing in events in the early 1960s, while also running a coffee bar in Streatham. He continued to act on UK TV until 1978, but eventually returned to California, where he ultimately died from kidney failure.
