Craggy American character actor with square jaw, steely gaze and dark, receding hair, much seen in later life as judges, sheriffs and priests. Dozens of film appearances include those in The Legend of Billy Jack (1974), The Commitment (1976), Two Minute Warning (1976), The Veldt (1979), Wildrose (1983), The Lightship (1985), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), True Believer (1989), Die Hard 2 (1990), Raising Cain (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994), White Man's Burden (1995), The Postman (1997), The Negotiator (1998), The Million Dollar Hotel (2000), High Crimes (2002), Human Error (2004), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Appaloosa (2008), Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009), The Killer Inside Me (2010), Out of the Furnace (2013), Lamb (2015), In Embryo (2016), El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019), Double Down South (2022) and We Have a Ghost (2023), his last. Also the founder of three theatre companies, he died in his sleep. His wife of more than 50 years, Ursula, died in August 2023.
