Very tall, long-nosed, latterly distinctively white-bearded English character actor, seen in a variety of eccentric roles, and for several years a stalwart of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Cinema appearances included those in Flash Gordon (1980), Those Glory, Glory Days (1983), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), Feuer, Els & Dynamit (1990), Gentlemen Don't Eat Poets (1995), The Borrowers (1997), Lighthouse (1999), In the Doghouse (2002), The Thief Lord (2006), Low Tide (2008), The Great Ghost Rescue (2011), Late September (2012), Back to the Garden (2013), Mr Turner (2014), A Change in the Weather (2017), Peterloo (2018), Intrigo: Samaria (2019) and 23 Walks (2020), his last. He died from cancer.
