Died - 2 June 2011

Piquant, full-lipped, dark-haired, crow-voiced, cheeky-looking British star, mainly on stage and TV. It was in the latter medium that she scored her greatest personal success as the militant shop steward of the comedy series The Rag Trade. Born Miriam Samuels (Mim to her friends), and a union activist in real life, too, she began her career entertaining wartime troops in ENSA shows. Films were always a bit of a sideline, but she did make quite a few, among them The Holly and the Ivy (1952), The Deep Blue Sea (1955), Room at the Top (1958), Carve Her Name with Pride (1958), The Entertainer (1960), The Phantom of the Opera (1962), Just Like a Woman (1966), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank (1988, for TV), UTZ (1992), Incognito (1997), The Man Who Cried (2000), Suzie Gold (2004), Children of Men (2006) and Flashbacks of a Fool (2008), her last. She died from cancer.
