Dark, taciturn, well-built, thickly dark-haired American leading man, born Richard Treat Williams, who brought presence if only a modicum of expression to his star roles. Despite coming to prominence in Hair (1979), his close-set features have seemed most at home in intensely serious parts. (1980), Prince of the City (1981), Once Upon a Time in America (1983), Flashpoint (1984), Smooth Talk (1985), The Men's Club (1986), Sweet Lies (1987), Night of the Sharks (1988), Heart of Dixie (1989), Beyond the Ocean (1990), Where the Rivers Flow North (1993), Handgun (1994), Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995), Mulholland Falls (1996), The Devil's Own (1997), Deep Rising (1998), The Deep End of the Ocean (1999), Blood from a Stone (2000), Crash Point Zero (2001), Hollywood Ending (2002), The Fraternity (2003), Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005), Moola (2007), What Happens in Vegas (2008), Howl (2010), A Little Bit of Heaven (2011), Deadfall (2012), Reaching for the Moon (2013), Operation Rogue (2014), The Etruscan Smile (2017), The Great Alaskan Race (2019), Run Hide Fight (2020) and 12 Mighty Orphans (2021), his last.
