Happy-looking, light-haired, round-faced Czech director, notably responsible, together with Milos Forman, for the rejuvenation of the Czech cinema in the late 1960s. The winner of numerous awards, his directorial work, often in sardonic comedy, includes Closely Observed Trains (1966), Capricious Summer (1968), Larks on a String (1969), Who Looks for Gold (1974), Secluded, Near Woods (1976), Those Wonderful Movie Cranks (1979), Shortcuts (1981), My Sweet Little Village (1985), King of the Castle/The End of Old Times (1989), The Beggar's Opera (1991), Ivana Conkina (1994), Ten Minutes Older (2002), I Served the King of England (2006) andThe Don Juans (2013), his last. He also acted in more than 50 films, from Courage for Every Day (1964) to The Interpreter (2018), his last. He died following brain surgery and meningitis.
