Plum-nosed, dark-eyed, bearded and moustachioed acclaimed French writer who penned dozens of screenplays over a 60-year period and was awarded an honorary Academy Award for his body of work in 2015, after being nominated three times before and jointly winning an Oscar for Happy Anniversary (1962), one of two short comedies he wrote and directed with the comedian Pierre Etaix. He continued working with Etaix, while embarking on feature-length screenplays for other directors, notably Luis Bunuel: Diary of a Chambermaid (1963), Yoyo (1965), Viva Maria! (1965), Belle de Jour (1967), The Milky Way (1969), Borsalino (1970), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), The Phantom of Liberty (1974), Leonor (1975), That Obscure Object of Desire (1977), The Tin Drum (1979), Circle of Deceit (1981), The Return of Martin Guerre (1982), Swann in Love (1984), Max, Mon Amour (1986), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), The Bengali Night 1988), Valmont (1989), At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991), The Return of Casanova (1994), The Horseman on the Roof (1995), Chinese Box (1997), Salsa (2000), Birth (2004), Goya's Ghosts (2006), The 4th Wall (2010),The Artist and the Model (2012), A Bigger Splash (2015), At Eternity's Gate (2018), The Salt of Tears (2020), Land of Dreams (2021), his last, and scores more films and TV movies: words simply flowed from his talented pen. 'I try to bring something new to each endeavour,' he once said. Nahal, his third wife, survives him.
