Trailblazing actor of boyish handsomeness. One of the earliest black American actors to appear in leading roles, he spent his latter years teaching acting and drama at Washington's Howard University. On TV from his early twenties, Freeman made his film debut in Torpedo Run (1958), subsequently appearing in This Rebel Breed (1960), Sniper's Ridge (1961), Ensign Pulver (1964), For Pete's Sake (1966), the lead in the innovative Dutchman (1967), The Detective (1968), The Lost Man (1969), Castle Keep (1969) and A Fable (1971); then much TV and theatre work before Seven Hours to Judgment (1988), as Elijah Muhammad in Spike Lee's Malcolm X (1992), Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored (1995) and Down in the Delta (1998), his last.
