Paul Massie

Actor/educator

Born - 7 July 1932, St Catherine's, Ontario, Canada
Died - 8 June 2011

Pale-blue-eyed actor with fair curly hair and mellifluous speaking voice, briefly in leading roles in the British cinema of the late 1950s before quitting acting in 1966 to become a professor in the theatre department of the University of South Florida. Born Arthur Masse (pronounced Massay), he made his film debut with a small role in High Tide at Noon (1957), set in Nova Scotia where, ironically, he made his home in later years. His remaining roles, though, were all leads: Orders to Kill (1958, winning a BAFTA as best newcomer), Sapphire (1959), Libel (1959), The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll (1960), The Rebel (1961) and The Pot Carriers (1962). As he neared retirement at USF, there was one latter-day film role, in The Naked Eye (1995). He died from lymphoma.
