Robert Vaughn

Born - 22 November 1932, New York City, USA
Died - 11 November 2016

Dark-haired, intense-looking American actor with 'metallic' voice, whose 'cruel' handsomeness seemed made for crafty villains. But, after early struggles, it was as an iconic hero that he made his name, in the title role of The Man from UNCLE, a TV series so popular that many of its double-episode thrillers were shown in the UK as feature films. He had been busy in insignificant film roles from the mid 1950s: The Ten Commandments (1956), Teenage Delinquents (1957), Teenage Caveman/Out of the Darkness (1958). But an Oscar-nominated turn in The City Jungle (1959) and work as one of The Magnificent Seven (1960) boosted his profile. He remained merely a top featured player in films, however. After his great TV success as Napoleon Solo, he was seen in Bullitt (1968), The Mind of Mr Soames (1969), The Statue (1971), The Towering Inferno (1974), Brass Target (1978), Battle Beyond the Stars (1979), SOB (1981), Superman III (1983), The Delta Force (1986) and many more, often TV movies or straight-to-video titles. His last films were Gold Star and The American Side, both made in the year of his death from acute leukemia. His marriage to actress Linda Staab endured until he died.
