Arthur Penn

Director

Born - 27 September 1922, Philadedelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Died - 28 September 2010

Three times nominated for an Oscar, Penn was a director with a varied if somewhat spasmodic output. Violence plays an important role in all Penn's films, and many of them were considerable successes. After switching from acting to directing, and helming some TV plays in the 1950s, Penn began his cinema career with a study of western outlaw Billy the Kid, played by Paul Newman in The Left-Handed Gun (1958). This was followed by The Miracle Worker (1962), Mickey One (1965), The Chase (1966) and his greatest success Bonnie and Clyde (1967). Also of interest were Alice's Restaurant (1969), Little Big Man (1970) and Night Moves (1975). His last theatrical feature was the rather less important Penn and Teller Get Killed in 1989. Married to the same woman for 55 years, Penn died from congestive heart failure.
