Kevin McCarthy

Actor

Born - 15 February 1914, Seattle, Washington, USA
Died - 11 September 2010

Now forever enshrined as the man on the run from the Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) - he was still running in the 1984 remake - this large-headed, light-haired, spade-chinned actor was very much a man of the stage in his early years, not beginning a film career in earnest until past 40. He made his movie debut in Winged Victory (1944) and, after war service, began a prolific TV career in 1949, one of his earliest triumphs being as Mr Rochester in a 1952 version of Jane Eyre. The previous year he had made his second film, winning praise for his portrayal of Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman. Becoming a film regular from 1954, he played villains in the first two: Drive a Crooked Road and The Gambler from Natchez. After Body Snatchers, he enjoyed a leading role in Nightmare (1956), before moving into character parts with the onset of middle age, but often in decent films: The Misfits (1961), The Prize (1963), The Best Man (1964), Mirage (1965), Big Deal at Dodge City (1966), Hotel (1967), Kansas City Bomber (1972), Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976) and Piranha (1978). He worked hard to the end: Just Cause (1995), Addams Family Reunion (1998), Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), Slipstream (2007) and Drawback (2010) his last, among many others. He died from pneumonia.
