Tall, dark-haired, quietly self-effacing American actor, a conscientious objector at the time of the Korean War. That was something that slowed his career until he was cast opposite Marilyn Monroe as the naive young cowboy in 1956's Bus Stop, which won him an Oscar nomination. His subsequent performances were always earnest and sincere, and he built up an impressive CV that included The Bachelor Party (1957), A Hatful of Rain (1957), Manhunt/From Hell to Texas (1958), These Thousand Hills (1959), Shake Hands With the Devil (1959), One Foot in Hell (1960), The Hoodlum Priest (1961), Advise and Consent (1962), Escape from East Berlin (1962), One Man's Way (1964), Kid Rodelo (1965), Baby, the Rain Must Fall (1965), The Viking Queen (1967), Childish Things (1969), Happy Birthday Wanda June (1972), Deadly Hero (1975), then a host of TV movies until Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Made in Heaven (1987), Score (1989), Ghosts Can't Do It (1990), Island Prey (2001) and Promise (2021), his last. After divorce from actress Hope Lange, he was married to actress Bettie Johnson for more than 60 years. She survives him, along with their three children.
