George Mikell

Born - 4 April 1929, Bildeniai, Lithuania
Died - 12 May 2020

Born Jurgis Mikelaitis, this pale-eyed, Lithuanian-born character actor with narrow features spent virtually his entire film career playing Nazis and other sinister foreigners, ironic in view of the suffering inflicted on his farming family by the Germans during World War Two. The highlight from dozens of such roles in British and international roles was perhaps his SS torturer in The Guns of Navarone (1961). After the war he had moved to Australia, re-locating to Britain in 1957 when acting opportunities beckoned: The One That Got Away (1957), Kill Her Gently (1957), Sea of Sand (1958), Operation Bullshine (1959), Beyond the Curtain (1960), Circle of Deception (1960), Mystery Submarine (1962), The Password is Courage (1962), The Great Escape (1963), The Victors (1963), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Operation Crossbow (1965), Where the Spies Are (1966), The Double Man (1967), Attack on the Iron Coast (1968), Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969), Zeppelin (1971), Young Winston (1971), Scorpio (1973), The Tamarind Seed (1974), Sweeney 2 (1978), The Sea Wolves (1980), Escape to Victory (1981), Code Name: Emerald (1985), Night of the Fox (1990), his last, and many others, before concentrating on his second career as a writer.
