Deceptively tall, slim but craggy American actor of attractively homely features and dark, curly hair. Briefly popular in leading roles from the late 1960s, he also had a successful TV series as the lawyer Petrocelli. Films include Pretty Boy Floyd (1960), The Moving Finger (1963), The Lawyer (1969), Vanishing Point (1971), The Salzburg Connection (1972), Fear is the Key (1972), Night Games (1974), City on Fire (1978), Amy (1981), Having It All (1982), Hunt for the Blue Diamond (1993), Daylight (1996), Goodbye Lover (1997), Brown's Requiem (1998), Bowfinger (1999), Jack the Dog (2001), 40 Days and 40 Nights (2002), Manhood (2003), What the Bleep Do We Know? (2004), Grilled (2006) and Raise Your Kids on Seltzer (2015), his last. Survived by Angela, his wife of nearly 60 years, he died from laryngeal cancer. Some sources give his year of birth as 1930.
