Big, baggy-eyed, bulky English actor with rumbling voice, thinning brown hair and crumpled, muskrat-like features. Best recalled as Dumbledore in the last six Harry Potter movies, a doggedly humorous Maigret on TV and the title character in The Singing Detective on TV, his films included Othello (1965), Nothing But the Night (1972), The Beast Must Die (1974), The Waiting Room (1977), Turtle Diary (1985), The Rachel Papers (1989), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), Mobsters: The Evil Empire (1991), Toys (1992), The Browning Version (1993), A Man of No Importance (1994), Bullet to Beijing (1995), Mary Reilly (1996), The Wings of the Dove (1997), Dancing at Lughnasa (1998), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Endgame (2000), Gosford Park (2001), Charlotte Gray (2001), Open Range (2003), Layer Cake (2004), Being Julia (2004), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), The Omen (2006), Brideshead Revisited (2008), The King's Speech (2010), Quartet (2012), a voice in Paddington (2014), Dad's Army (2016), Victoria & Abdul (2017), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), Citizen Lane (2018) and Judy (2019), his last.
