Affable, balding, latterly moustachioed character player with distinctive cheekbones, a favourite of director Billy Wilder, who used him in several of his films. Born Clifford Osman Ebrahim, he began appearing on TV from 1960 and made his film debut in How the West was Won (1962). Later appearances included those in Irma La Douce (1963), Kiss Me, Stupid (1964), Meet Whiplash Willie/The Fortune Cookie (1966), Three Guns for Texas (1968), Sweet Sugar (1972), Oklahoma Crude (1973), The Front Page (1974), Joe Panther (1976), Hill's Angels/The North Avenue Irregulars (1979), Hangar 18 (1980), In Search of a Golden Sky (1984), and For Which He Stands (1996), his last as an actor, although he directed the films The Penitent (1988) and Bxx: Haunted (2012). In later years, he became a respected drama teacher with his own Actors' Studio. He died from pancreatic cancer.
