Juliette Greco

Actress/singer

Born - 7 February 1926, Montpelier, France
Died - 23 September 2020

Dark-haired, dark-eyed, sultry-looking French nightclub chanteuse, a former ballerina, whose acerbic songs made her the darling of Paris Left-Bank existentialist cellars. She had a sporadic career in French films before being 'discovered' in her early thirties by Darryl F Zanuck, who put her under contract to 20th Century-Fox for five years. She seemed to lose interest in the cinema from 1966 after marrying (second) French star Michel Piccoli. But that ended in divorce after 10 years and she later remarried. Her films include The Brothers Bouquinquant (1947), Au Royaume des Ceux (1949), Orphee (1950), Boum sur Paris! (1953), Elena et Les Hommes/Paris Does Strange Things (1956), The Sun Also Rises (1957), The Naked Earth/Alligator River (1957), Roots of Heaven (1958), Bonjour Tristesse (1958), Whirlpool (1959), Crack in the Mirror (1960), The Big Gamble (1961), Canzoni nel Mondo/38-24-36 (1962), L'Amour a la Mer (1964), Uncle Tom's Cabin (1965), The Night of the Generals (1966), Le Desordre a 20 Ans (1967), Far West (1973) and Lily, Aime-Moi (1974). Years later, she was seen in Jedermann's Fest (1997), Belphegor: Phantom of the Louvre (2001) and Hotel La Louisiane (2015), her last.
