Barry Humphries

Comedian/actor

Born - 17 February 1934, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Died - 22 April 2023

Bulky, brown-haired, cheerful-looking, much-married, irrepressible Australian comedian whose most memorable creation was Edna Everage, a Dame with a cutting quip for every occasion. After early experience in revue, he moved to London, making a name for himself at Peter Cook's Establishment nightclub. Films were occasional, but often one-man shows, sometimes featuring his next most-famous creation, the joyfully uncouth Sir Les Patterson: Bedazzled (1967), The Bliss of Mrs Blossom (1968), The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972), Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974), Side by Side (1975), The Getting of Wisdom (1977), ShockTreatment (1981), Dr Fischer of Geneva (1983), Howling III(1987), Immortal Beloved (1994), Welcome to Woop Woop (1997), Spice World (1997), Nicholas Nickleby (2002), a voice in Finding Nemo (2003), Salvation (2008), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016), his last. Four times marred, he died after complications from a hip operation.
