Junior Coghlan

Actor

Born - 15 March 1916, New Haven, Connecticut, USA
Died - 7 September 2009

A famous child actor before a 20-year stint in the US Navy, Francis 'Frank' Coghlan Jr got into films when he and his parents did Hollywood extra work after moving to California. He was first billed in Daredevil Jack (1920) and became furiously busy in silent films. He made a smooth transition to sound, featuring in Penrod and Sam (1931), a serialised Last of the Mohicans (1932, as Uncas), Alibi Ike (1935), Little Red Schoolhouse (1936) and many more. He played smaller roles in the late 1930s, re-emerging to stardom (now billed as Frank Coghlan Jr) as the eponymous superhero in the serial Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941). During his 23-year navy stint, he headed the service's film cooperation programme, returning to acting from 1966, playing small roles in The Sand Pebbles (1966), Valley of the Dolls (1967) and The Love God? (1969), his last. Described in his childhood days as 'an appealing waif', Coghlan wrote an autobiography titled They Still Call Me Junior.
