Tall, balding, authoritative English actor, purely a theatrical (mainly Shakesperian) performer until he moved to America in 1979. Films there, often in lordly roles, include Riel (1979), Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), Back to School (1986), Baby Boom (1987), Nervous Ticks (1992), The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993), My Boyfriend's Back (1993), Goldilocks and the Three Bears (1995), RocketMan (1997), The Duke (1999), Kate & Leopold (2001), The Aristocrat (2009) and a TV movie version of The Importance of Being Earnest, his last, in 2011. He died from complications following a fall at his home.
