Ann Gillis

Actress

Born - 12 February 1927, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA
Died - 31 January 2018

Pert American child actress (the original Little Girl from Little Rock!) with curly auburn hair, often seen as bratty youngsters - though nicer in her biggest hits. Born Alma Connor, she had extra bits in films of the early thirties, including Men in White (1934) as a flower girl. Her credited roles began in 1936 with King of Hockey and she was subsequently seen in many more, including The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and You Can't Buy Luck (1937). She was Becky Thatcher in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938) and played the title role in Little Orphan Annie the same year. Teenage roles were, on the whole, less interesting: The Under-Pup (1939), All This and Heaven, Too (1940), Little Men (1940), Nice Girl? (1941), Meet the Stewarts (1942), the voice of Faline in Bambi (1942), Stage Door Canteen (1943), Janie (1944), The Cheaters (1945), Janie Gets Married (1946), The Time of Their Lives (1946) and Big Town After Dark (1947), after which she retired to marry. Her second husband was Scottish-born Hollywood actor Richard Fraser. They moved to England (where she died), but divorced after 18 years. Fraser died from cancer the following year. Her last film job was a small scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968.
