Mary Murphy

Born - 26 January 1931, Washington, DC, USA
Died - 4 May 2011

Plucked from serving in a department store to signing a Hollywood contract, this lovely, rather sad-looking actress with lustrous brunette hair did little but bit parts and walk-ons for two years before landing the female lead opposite Marlon Brando in The Wild One (1953). For the rest of the decade, she enjoyed decent leading roles in colourful co-features, but drifted away from acting after the mid 1970s, and ran an art gallery. Early bit parts included those in The Lemon Drop Kid (1951), When Worlds Collide (1951), My Favorite Spy (1951), Carrie (1952), Plymouth Adventure (1952) and Houdini (1953). After The Wild One, her beauty kept her in prominent roles, and she starred in Sitting Bull (1954), Beachhead (1954), Hell's Island (1955) A Man Alone (1955), The Intimate Stranger (1956, in the UK), The Maverick Queen (1956), back to the UK for Escapement (1957), then Live Fast, Die Young (1958) and Crime and Punishment USA (1959). Later films included Red Hell (1962), Harlow (1965) and Junior Bonner (1972), her last theatrical feature. She married twice, the first to actor Dale Robertson. She died from heart disease.
