Crafty-looking in later years, dark-haired English actor of working-class background. Started in straight roles as a teenager, then, under the sponsorship of Alastair Sim, segued, after war service, into shy young bachelors with two left feet, as exemplified by his leading role in the long-running radio series A Life of Bliss. Later, he excelled as 'spivs' and men on the make, notably Flash Harry in the first four St Trinian's romps, and dodgy dealer Arthur Daley in the classic TV series Minder. Many film appearances included those in Cottage to Let (1941), Henry V (1944), Quartet (1948), The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950), Scrooge (1951), Our Girl Friday (1953), Will Any Gentleman?... (1953), The Belles of St Trinian's (1954), It's a Wonderful World (1956), Too Many Crooks (1959), The Pure Hell of St Trinian's (1960), One Way Pendulum (1964), The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery (1966), Fright (1971), The Blue Bird (1976), Mary Reilly (1996) and The Ghost of Greville Lodge (2000), his last, although he continued acting in TV series until 2008. Married actresses Eileen Moore (1954-66) and Penny Morrell (1968 on).
