Very tall, portly, moustachioed, dark-haired, roguish-looking American character actor eye with twinkly eyes. Formerly an All-Pro linebacker, he segued into TV and films (often in football-oriented roles) and made Brian's Song (1973), Cry Onion (1975), Mother, Jugs and Speed (1976), Gus (1976), Deadly Games (1982), Johnny Dangerously (1984), Hamburger: The Motion Picture (1986), Spontaneous Combustion (1988), Gremlins II The New Batch (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), Let's Kill All the Lawyers (1992), Any Given Sunday (1999) and Teddy Bears' Picnic (2001), his last movie, although he continued acting on TV until 2014. Survived by Helen, his wife of more than 60 years, and three children.
