Renee Asherson

Actress

Born - 19 May 1915, Kensington, London, England
Died - 30 October 2014

Brown-haired, large-eyed English actress of piquant if somewhat distant appeal, in subdued film roles from her late twenties after a decade of stage success. Born Dorothy Renee Ascherson, her movie output was limited, partly due to her withdrawn personality and, declining to 'B' features by the early 1950s, she concentrated mainly on the stage thereafter: The Way Ahead (1944), Henry V (1944), The Way to the Stars (1945), Once a Jolly Swagman (1948), The Small Back Room (1948), The Cure for Love (1949), Pool of London (1950), The Magic Box (1951), Malta Story (1953), Time is My Enemy (1954), The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961), Rasputin the Mad Monk (1965), The Smashing Bird I Used to Know (1969) and Theatre of Blood (1973). In old age, she made two more: Grey Owl (1998) and The Others (2001). She married actor Robert Donat, although they were separated at the time of his death in 1958.
