Martin Benson

Actor

Born - 10 August 1918, London, England
Died - 3 March 2010

Shady bow-tied figures, often with foreign accents, were the stock-in-trade of this dark-haired, sharp-faced, frequently moustachioed actor, who was in films as early as 1941, with Banana Ridge. Further roles in Suspected Person (1942) and Undercover (1943) followed, before war service. After the war, Benson quickly picked up his film career again, etching dozens of devious characters, including those in The Blind Goddess (1948), I'll Get You for This (1951), Ivanhoe (1952), West of Zanzibar (1954) and 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956), plus slimy villains in dozens of second-feature crime thrillers. His highest profile role came as Yul Brynner's chancellor in The King and I (1956), although there were also decent parts in Windom's Way (1958), Gorgo (1961), The Devil Never Sleeps (1962), Goldfinger (1964) and A Man Could Get Killed (1966). Latter-day appearances came in The Sea Wolves (1980, Young Toscanini (1988) and Angela's Ashes (1999), his last.
