Burly, crafty-looking French character actor and sometime leading man, often moustachioed and/or bearded and a favourite of directors Claude Chabrol and Alain Jessua, who both featured his talents in several of their best films. After a brief appearance in The Longest Day (1962), he soon rose to stardom in films from his native country: Jeu de Massacre (1967), La femme Infidele (1968), Que la Bete Meure/Killer! (1969), Them (1970), Juste avant la Nuit (1971), The Tall Blond Man with the One Black Shoe (1972), Traitement de Choc (1973), NADA (1974), L'Homme Presse (1977), La Ville des Silences (1979), Fort Saganne (1984), Life and Nothing But (1989), Milou in May (1990), Pas d'Amour sans Amour (1993), Disparus (1998), Lise et Andre (2000), Amen (2002), Labyrinth (2003), La Demoiselle d'Honneur (2004), Arthur and the Invisibles (2006), Mesrine: Killer Instinct (2008, and a sequel the same year), Murphy's Law (2009) and Sarah's Key (2010), his last. He died from a heart attack.
