Swarthy, dark-haired, small-eyed, scrunch-faced, often bearded Australian actor who moved to Britain in the 1960s. After coming under the auspices of director Peter Brook, he entered TV and films, often as shady eccentrics of uncertain ethnicity, and making occasional returns for work in his native country. Films include Marat/Sade (1966), Inspector Clouseau (1968), Isadora (1968), Where's Jack? (1969), Underground (1970), The Last Valley (1971), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Tales That Witness Madness (1973), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Rollicking Adventures of Eliza Fraser (1976), Sweeney 2 (1978), Time Bandits (1981), Eleni (1985), Whoops Apocalypse (1986), Personal Services (1987), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), Bloodmoon (1990), Nostradamus (1994), Surviving Picasso (1996), For My Baby (1997), Esther Kahn (2000), The Book of Eve (2002), Suzie Gold (2004), Song of Songs (2005) and I Really Hate My Job (2007), his last. His wife, actress Heather Canning, died from cancer in 1996.
