Irish actor with tousled dark hair, often seen in rugged outdoor roles. After beginnings as a stage carpenter, he came to England in the late 1950s, and was soon busy on TV and in films: The Criminal (1960), Jackpot (1960), The Kitchen (1961), HMS Defiant (1962), The Servant (1963), The Leather Boys (1964), A High Wind in Jamaica (1965), Four in the Morning (1965), Jemima and Johnny (1966), Accident (1967) and Honeybaby (1974), his last, by which time he was concentrating on his writing career. His (second) wife was English actress Dorothy Bromiley, who died two days before him.
