(Sir) Ian Holm

Actor

Born - 12 September 1931, Goodmayes, Essex, England
Died - 19 June 2020

Small, dark, earnest, no-neck English classical actor who made his name on stage, but will probably be remembered by most for his portraits of Bilbo Baggins in four latter-day 'Hobbit' movies. There was an isolated film debut in Girls at Sea (1958), but it was another decade before his movie career got going, with some eye-catching performances, although he was sometimes shunted into unsuitable roles that made the least of his many talents. He regained prominence in the 1980s, after being Oscar-nominated for his role in Chariots of Fire (1981). Many other film credits include The Fixer (1968), The Bofors Gun (1968), Oh! What a Lovely War (1969), A Severed Head (1970), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Young Winston (1971), Juggernaut (974), Robin and Marian (1976), Alien (1979), Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1984), Another Woman (1988), Henry V (1989), Hamlet (1990), Naked Lunch (1991), The Madness of King George (1994), Loch Ness (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), Simon Magus (1999), From Hell (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), The Treatment (2006), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), his last. Born Ian Holm Cuthbert, and knighted in 1998, he died from Parkinson's Disease. Actress Penelope Wilton was the third of his four wives.
