Robin Williams

Actor/comedian

Born - 21 July 1951, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Died - 11 August 2014

Thin-lipped (but wide-mouthed), smily-faced, chestnut-haired American stand-up comedian who built up a reputation in rapid-fire comedy routines with wickedly accurate impersonations thrown in. Williams soon became a major film star after his success in the TV series Mork and Mindy, and notched up three Oscar nominations, for Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Dead Poets Society (1989) and The Fisher King (1991). In 1997, he won the award itself for Good Will Hunting. He was less successful in later times, often attempting sourly, sometimes creepily dramatic roles. After an early film debut in Can I Do It Till I Need Glasses? (1977), the rest of his movies brought him starring roles: Popeye (1980), The World According to Garp (1982), Moscow on the Hudson (1984), Seize the Day (1986), Cadillac Man (1990), Toys (1992), the voice of the genie in Aladdin (1992), Mrs Doubtfire (1993), Jumanji (1995), Flubber (1997), Bicentennial Man (1999), Insomnia (2002), Night at the Museum (2006), Old Dogs (2009) and The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014). He committed suicide by hanging himself.
