Douglas Slocombe

Cinematographer

Born - 10 February 1913, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
Died - 22 February 2016

Scholarly-looking, hugely successful British cinematographer who began life as a photo-journalist, but sidestepped into camerawork in World War Two and shot many of Ealing Studios' biggest hits before embarking on an international career. Nominated three times for an Oscar, he shamefully never won one. His prodigious output included Ships with Wings (1941), San Demetrio London (1943), Dead of Night (1945), It Always Rains on Sunday (1947), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951), The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953), Touch and Go (1955), Barnacle Bill (1957), The Young Ones (1961), The Servant (1963), A High Wind in Jamaica (1965), The Lion in Winter (1968), The Italian Job (1969), Travels With My Aunt (1972), The Great Gatsby (1974), Julia (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Lady Jane (1986) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), his last. He died from natural causes.
